Dr. Jose Esparza joined the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, in Seattle, Washington, USA as Senior Advisor on HIV Vaccines in May 2004. One major area of responsibility is the establishment of the Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise, an initiative to accelerate the search for an HIV vaccine.

With nearly two decades as a leader in international HIV work, Dr. Esparza was deeply involved in a number of international activities to promote and facilitate the development and evaluation of vaccines against HIV/AIDS.

In 1996 he joined the United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and, until the beginning of 2004, was the Coordinator of the WHO-UNAIDS HIV Vaccine Initiative. From 1986 to 1995 he was with the World Health Organization (WHO), in Geneva, Switzerland, where he became Chief of the Biomedical Research Unit of the WHO Global Programme of AIDS. Dr. Esparza has worked on different aspects of human virology, focusing on the study of Rotaviruses, making contributions in areas ranging from epidemiology to molecular biology. From 1974 to 1985 he worked at the Venezuelan Institute of Scientific Research in Caracas, Venezuela, where he became Chief of the Laboratory of Biology of Viruses, Chairman of the Centre of Microbiology and Cell Biology, and Professor of Virology.

He received his MD from the University of Zulia in Venezuela, and his PhD in Virology and Cell Biology from Baylor College of Medicine.
