March 9-14, 2007
From March 9-14 in 2007, Bart Haynes visited the Moshi, Tanzania site and the clinical research programs of CHAVI Investigators Saidi Kapiga, John Bartlett, John Crump, John Shao and Noel Sam at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center (KCMC). The preparations for implementing the CHAVI 003 protocol on studies in highly exposed and uninfected patients were reviewed and found to be excellent.
The laboratory facilities and staff at KCMC demonstrated excellent capabilities of carrying out both the CHAVI 001 and 003 protocols. In CHAVI 003, KCMC will focus on both peripheral blood and mucosal immunity studies in their efforts to understand immune correlates of protection to exposed and uninfected subjects. We anticipate that CHAVI 001 studies of acute HIV infection will start at KCMC sometime in July 2007 and CHAVI 003 studies will begin in late August or early September 2007.
Congratulations to the KCMC team for all their hard work on these protocols and we look forward to their initiation of these studies next quarter.
